Listen up girls. Too many times have I heard the line "Don’t take a picture of me, I look bad in photos". Let me tell you, there's no such thing as looking bad 'in photos', either you look good full stop, or you look bad full stop, the camera merely mirrors this. There is no conspiracy... the camera does not lie.
So, with this in mind, I would like to share some overdue advise with those of you self-proclaimed photophobes. If you do not pose for the camera, the likelihood is that you will not look good in the photo. The camera is your friend, smile for him!
Red Carpet 101
1. The Simple Smile - Effortless, natural, un-offensive.
If ever in doubt, the smile is the pose to opt for. The smile is for capturing a moment rather than a fierce ensemble, so throw an arm around those next to you and crack a big cheesy one!
2. The Quarter Turn Tilt - Made famous by Ms. Paris Hilton.
Stand side on with your hands on your hips and tilt that chin towards your shoulder. There is a reason why the QTT is such a popular and effective pose; its highlights the jaw-line, disguises drunken or lazy eyes and is a great way of keeping that party pooper pimple out of the picture.
3. The Paparazzi Scowl - As perfected notorious Hollywood party girl Ms. Lindsay Lohan.
This pose screams attitude. The paparazzi scowl is most effective when seated in a club. Have your Grey Goose Martini in hand, tilt your head back and slightly to the side and scowl at the camera. In your eyes should be a mixture of disgust and delight with your lips and mouth relaxed as if in mid conversation.
4. The 'Y' Pose - Oh Anna Nicole Smith, how we miss you gurl!!!!
If you're camp, curvy, blonde and loving it, raise those arms up high and act like you're surprised. This is a pose for those who are less about fashion and more about fun. This pose looks best when in heels and with a wink of your right eye.
5. The Playmate
This can be done in two ways; place both hands loosely resting on your hips, bend your right or left leg at the knee and pout. This pose is a cute one if you want to seem sexy but demure. Keep those eyes doe like as if butter wouldn't melt and blow out. The other Playmate pose is exactly the same except one hand is taken off your hip and raised up to your lips as if blowing the cameras a kiss. This pose is strictly tongue in chic and not for high society events, keep it fun, funky and for the clubs.
6. La Jolie - One of the 'it' poses of the moment.
Turn your back to the camera and look over your shoulder, then arch that back and clench that ass. A top tip for keeping this pose less 'hooch' and more 'haute', cross over your feet, raise one hand to your hip and the other resting on your collar bone. As you look over your shoulder remember to elongate your neck otherwise it'll make you look hunchbacked. As you can tell from its namesake, this pose is a fave of celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. Baby's got back, so serve it to them HAUTE!!!
So there you have it. Six sizzling poses for you to strike for the Paps. Remember, camera shy is nothing more than a lack of confidence and education in body language. Follow these rules and you can't go wrong.
