review

It's been 13 years since I was at Nottingham's 'alternative' hotspot Rockcity to see Supergrass. Most of what I can remember about the gig was being crushed between screaming teenage girls in a jumping, surging crowd. So it was an opportunity not to be passed up to see them this week with a Brighton audience and... perhaps most strangely... through headphones.

We arrived early to a bit of a school disco atmosphere - the dancefloor was scattered with slightly awkward looking groups who looked as though they were finding the utter silence of the room a bit intimidating. Even those who'd donned their headphones were finding it hard to let rip, though there were a few who'd already caught the bug and were singing along, eyes shut, as though they were in their bedrooms.

The surprisingly comfortable headphones delivered top quality sound that enveloped you entirely... and the benefits immediately began to show themselves. No listening to inane witterings of groups of foundation princesses waiting for the ladies - I could carry on listening to the DJ in my own little world as though I hadn't left the dancefloor!

It's easy for a great gig to be ruined by poor quality sound, so here was another huge advantage to the headphones. Whether you were inches from the stage or right at the back (or back in the queue for the ladies) the sound quality was note perfect.

Supergrass were spectacular. Gaz's vocals were spot on. To be this tight when we could hear every nuance through our headphones was really impressive - I doubt many big name bands would have pulled it off so well. At one point Gaz even removed his own headphones and played 'blind' with only the feint strumming of strings and the odd cow-bell to keep him in line... he passed his self-set test with flying colours without a chord or note out of place!

The guys went for it and were obviously enjoying themselves - bringing an energy to the gig every bit as bouncy as a more customary live band. Apparently moshing is possible with headphones - but equally we spotted Big Brother's Nicky just standing quietly and enjoying the music. Drummer Danny Goffey shone with his lively banter with the audience - and there was a great moment when he cried into his mic mid-song that he was losing his headphones, hardly missing a beat as someone rushed on stage to replace them for him.

It's very easy for me to recommend Silent Disco Live gigs... it'll be really interesting to see how many bands will be able to deliver as tight and vibrant a set as Supergrass though!

loved it!

Sorry ..it was rubbish. No atmosphere and even after 3 sets of headphones I still kept getting cut outs. Bizarre - yes, entertaining - a definite NO! A few hapless sing-a-longs is amusing for a few minutes but please - this is the kind of experience which I can get in the comfort of my own home. Supergrass are an amazing band but this did them no favours..
